William R. Cotter

William Ross Cotter (born July 18, 1926 in Hartford , Connecticut , † September 8, 1981 in East Lyme , Connecticut) was an American politician . Between 1971 and 1981 he represented the first constituency of the state of Connecticut in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Cotter attended the public schools in Hartford and then until 1949 the local Trinity College . Then he began a political career. He became a member of the Democratic Party and served on Hartford City Council in 1953. From 1955 to 1957 he was on the advisory board of Governor Abraham A. Ribicoff . Between 1957 and 1964 he was deputy and from 1964 to 1970 actual Insurance Commissioner of the State of Connecticut. Between 1954 and 1970 he was a delegate at all regional Democratic party conventions in his home state. In 1964 and 1968 he also took part as a delegate at the respective Democratic National Conventions .

In the 1970 congressional elections, William Cotter was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the First District of Connecticut . There he took over from Emilio Q. Daddario on January 3, 1971 . After five re-elections, he was able to exercise his mandate in Congress until his death on September 8, 1981.
