Herman P. Kopplemann (1935)

Herman Paul Kopplemann (born May 1, 1880 in Odessa , Ukraine , †  August 11, 1957 in Hartford , Connecticut ) was an American politician . Between 1933 and 1947 he represented the first constituency of the state of Connecticut in the US House of Representatives several times .

Career

Herman Kopplemann was born in 1880 in Odessa, which was then part of the Russian Empire . He came to the United States with his parents as early as 1882. The family settled in Hartford, where the young Kopplemann attended public schools. In 1894 he became a seller of newspapers and magazines. He later began a political career in the Democratic Party .

Between 1904 and 1912 Kopplemann was a councilor in Hartford; in 1911 he was its chairman. He was a member of the Connecticut Senate between 1917 and 1920 . In 1932 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the First District of Connecticut . There he took over from Augustine Lonergan on March 4, 1933 . His election victory is related to the federal trend in favor of the Democrats at the time, which culminated in the election of Franklin D. Roosevelt as US President . After two re-elections, Kopplemann was able to complete three consecutive terms in Congress by January 3, 1939 . In the 1938 elections he was defeated by Republican William J. Miller .

Until 1949, Kopplemann and Miller took turns in Congress. In the 1940 elections, Kopplemann was able to win back his mandate and between January 3, 1941 and January 3, 1943, he was able to spend another term in Congress before being replaced by Miller, who had won the 1942 election. Another two years later, Kopplemann managed to return to the Congress. Between January 3, 1945 and January 3, 1947, he completed his last term there. In 1946 he lost again to Miller, who then succeeded him again.

After the final end of his time in the US House of Representatives, Kopplemann was still chairman of the Connecticut state water committee. He died in Hartford on August 11, 1957 and was buried in Wethersfield .
