Ansel Sterling
Ansel Sterling (born February 3, 1782 in Lyme , Connecticut , † November 6, 1853 in Sharon , Connecticut) was an American politician . Between 1821 and 1825 he represented the state of Connecticut in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Ansel Sterling was the older brother of Micah Sterling (1784-1844), who represented New York State in Congress between 1821 and 1823 . He attended the public schools in his home country. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1805, he began to work in Salisbury in his new profession. In 1808 he moved his office and residence to Sharon.
Sterling was a member of the Democratic Republican Party . Between 1815 and 1837 he sat several times as a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives . In the 1820 congressional election, held nationwide, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC for the fifth term from Connecticut . There he took over from Elisha Phelps on March 4, 1821 . After being re-elected in 1822, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1825. After the dissolution of his party in those years, he joined the faction around the later President John Quincy Adams , which also supported him in his re-election in 1822.
After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, Sterling was temporarily a member of the state parliament until 1837 and practiced as a lawyer again. Between 1838 and 1840 he was the presiding judge on the Litchfield County Court of Appeals . Ansel Sterling died on November 6, 1853 in Sharon and was buried there.
