Benjamin Tallmadge (born February 25, 1754 in Brookhaven , New York Province, † March 7, 1835 in Litchfield , Connecticut ) was an American politician . Between 1801 and 1817 he represented the state of Connecticut in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Benjamin Tallmadge was born in Brookhaven, Long Island in 1754 during the British colonial period . By 1773 he was studying at Yale College ; between 1773 and 1776 he was head of Wethersfield High School . At the outbreak of the War of Independence he joined the American cause and was a soldier in the Continental Army , in which he rose to the rank of colonel . There he was temporarily head of the Culper Ring . He is considered one of the first American intelligence officers .

After the war, Tallmadge moved to Litchfield, Connecticut in 1783. There he became a postman in 1792 . He also became the first president of Phoenix Branch Bank . In addition, he was first treasurer and then also president of the Society of the Cincinnati , a society for upholding the traditions of the American Revolution. Politically, Tallmadge became a member of the Federalist Party .

In the state-wide held congressional elections of 1800 Tallmadge was elected for the first seat of his state in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded William Edmond on March 4, 1801 . After seven re-elections, he was able to complete eight legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1817 . During this time, the British-American War of 1812 and the acquisition of Louisiana territory by Thomas Jefferson's Louisiana Purchase in 1803 took place.

In 1816 Tallmadge renounced another candidacy. After his time in Congress, he worked in trade, especially in the import business. He was also still active in the banking industry. He died on March 7, 1835 in Litchfield and was buried there. Benjamin Tallmadge, after whom the place Tallmadge in Ohio is named, was the father of Frederick A. Tallmadge (1792-1869), who represented New York State in the US House of Representatives between 1847 and 1849.

Film adaptations

Benjamin Tallmadge plays an important role in the US historical series Turn: Washington's Spies , which deals with the Culper Ring spy connection under George Washington's command .
