Donald Jay Irwin (born September 7, 1926 in Argentina , † July 7, 2013 in Norwalk , Connecticut ) was an American politician . Between 1959 and 1961 and between 1965 and 1969 he represented the state of Connecticut in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Donald Irwin was born in Argentina in 1926 and came to the United States in 1945 to study at Yale University . Then he joined the US Army . There he was part of a Brazilian- American unit in Rio de Janeiro . After returning to the USA, he continued his education. After studying law at Yale and being admitted to the bar in 1954, he began his new profession in Connecticut. While studying at Yale, he had also taught Spanish on the side. Irwin also became a member of the Norwalk City Education Committee.

Politically, Irwin joined the Democratic Party . In 1958 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , as their candidate in the fourth constituency of Connecticut , where he succeeded Republican Albert P. Morano on January 3, 1959 . But since he lost to Abner W. Sibal in the 1960 elections , he was initially only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until January 3, 1961 .

After serving in the House of Representatives, Irwin became an advisor to the United States Information Agency in 1961 . In 1962 he was named State Treasurer of Connecticut by Governor John N. Dempsey . In the elections of 1964 he was able to beat Abner Sibal and win back his old seat in Congress. After being re-elected in 1866, he was able to spend two more consecutive legislative terms there between January 3, 1965 and January 3, 1969. These were determined by the discussions about the civil rights movement and the Vietnam War . In the 1968 elections Donald Irwin lost to Lowell P. Weicker .

After his final departure from Congress, Irwin returned to practice as a lawyer. He was elected Mayor of Norwalk in 1971 and 1973. In 1975 he turned down another candidacy for this office. Subsequently, Irwin, father of two sons and two daughters, lived in Rowayton .
