Lowell Palmer Weicker Jr. (born May 16, 1931 in Paris ) is an American politician and was a senator and governor of the US state of Connecticut.

Career

Lowell P. Weicker Jr. was born on May 16, 1931 in Paris to American parents. He graduated from Yale University in 1953 and from the University of Virginia Law School in 1958 . He was in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955 , where he was first lieutenant . He then served in the Army Reserves between 1958 and 1964 . He was also elected to the Connecticut House of Representatives in 1962 and then re-elected twice. In 1968 he was elected to the US Congress . At the end of his session, Weicker was elected to the US Senate in 1970 and re - elected in 1976 and 1982. In 1973 he was appointed to the Senate Watergate Committee , where he was also chairman and a Republican member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee . In the 1988 election he lost his seat to Joseph Lieberman . In 1990, after leaving the Republican Party, he became the first Independent to be elected to the governor of Connecticut. He also received the 1992 John F. Kennedy Profiles in Courage Award for his work in reforming Connecticut's tax framework.
