Abiram Chamberlain (born December 7, 1837 in Colebrook , Litchfield County , Connecticut , † May 15, 1911 in Meriden , Connecticut) was an American politician and governor of the US state of Connecticut. He was a member of the Republican Party .

Early years and political advancement

Chamberlain studied civil engineering at Williston Seminary in Easthampton , Massachusetts . He then worked for a few years in his father's engineering company before switching to banking. In 1881 he was President of New Britain National Bank and later Vice President of Meriden Savings Bank . Chamberlain decided to embark on a political career in the 1870s. He became a member of the Meriden City Council. He also ran for a seat in the Connecticut House of Representatives in 1877 , where he remained until 1878 after a successful election. He was then from 1901 to 1902 State Comptroller in Connecticut.

Connecticut Governor

Chamberlain won the Republican gubernatorial nomination in 1902 and was elected governor of Connecticut a short time later. During his tenure, he signed into law establishing Connecticut State Police. He also upheld laws that supported workers. On January 4, 1905, he left office and retired from public service.

Abiram Chamberlain died on May 15, 1911 and was subsequently buried in the Walnut Grove Cemetery in Meriden. He was married to Charlotte Roberts. The couple had two children together.
