Luzon B. Morris

Luzon Burritt Morris (born April 16, 1827 in Newtown , Fairfield County , Connecticut , † August 22, 1895 in New Haven , Connecticut) was an American politician and governor of the US state of Connecticut. He was a member of the Democratic Party .

Early years and political advancement

Luzon Morris graduated from Yale University in 1858 , then studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1856. Morris decided in 1855 to embark on a political career. He ran for a seat in the House of Representatives from Connecticut , where he also worked after a successful election. He had also been re-elected to this position in 1856, 1870, 1876, 1880, and again in 1881. He also served as a judge in the New Haven Probate Court between 1857 and 1863, and a member of the Connecticut Senate between 1874 and 1876 . He has also served on a number of committees, one of which was to improve Connecticut's estate laws. He ran for governor of Connecticut twice, in 1888 and 1890, unsuccessfully.

Connecticut Governor

Morris was elected governor of Connecticut in 1892. During his tenure, he advocated constitutional changes in electoral laws, but was unsuccessful in making the changes. Governor Morris' popularity gradually waned as a result of the bleak financial depression that overwhelmed the state, so he did not seek re-election.

After he left office on January 9, 1895, he returned to his legal practice. He also later served as president of the Connecticut Savings Bank of New Haven .

Luzon B. Morris died on August 22, 1895 and was then buried in Evergreen Cemetery in New Haven. He was married to Eugenia L. Tuttle. The couple had six children together.
