Henry W. Edwards

Henry Waggaman Edwards (born October 1779 in New Haven , Connecticut , † July 22, 1847 ibid) was an American politician and the ninth governor of the US state of Connecticut. He was a member of the Democratic Party .

Life

Edwards was the son of Pierpont Edwards , who was instrumental in the formation of the Connecticut Democratic Party. He graduated in 1797 at Princeton University and earned a law degree ( Engl. Law degree ) at the Litchfield Law School . He then went on to work as a lawyer.

Edwards later decided to go into politics. He ran for a post in the Connecticut House of Representatives as a Democrat in 1818 and won. He worked there as a clerk . In 1830 he was re-elected to the House of Representatives and this time held the post of speaker . He was also a member of the US House of Representatives from 1819 to 1823 . Edwards only gave up his activity there when he was elected to the US Senate . He held this post until March 1827. He then served in the Connecticut Senate in 1828 . In 1832 he was elected lieutenant governor of Connecticut, but the office was stripped from him by the state legislature.

Edwards was elected Governor of Connecticut by the General Assembly in 1833 . He failed in his re-election attempt in 1834, but had success in 1835, 1836 and 1837. During his tenure, a discriminatory education law was passed, the rail industry grew significantly, and the state conducted a geological survey in 1835.

Edwards lost the Democratic Party nomination for Connecticut governor in 1838 and retired from public life. Governor Henry W. Edwards was buried in Grove Street Cemetery in New Haven.
