P. Davis Oakey

Peter Davis Oakey (born February 25, 1861 in East Millstone , Somerset County , New Jersey , †  November 18, 1920 in New Haven , Connecticut ) was an American politician . Between 1915 and 1917 he represented the first constituency of the state of Connecticut in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Davis Oakey attended public schools in his New Jersey homeland, including Millstone High School . In 1886 he moved to Hartford , Connecticut, where he worked in commerce and politics. He became a member of the Republican Party and served on Hartford City Council from 1891 to 1895. From 1894 to 1895 he was employed by the city administration as a tax collector for city taxes. From 1895 to 1901, Oakey was a member of the Connecticut National Guard ; from 1900 to 1915 he was an administrative clerk ( City Assessor ) of the city of Hartford.

In the 1914 congressional election, Oakey was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first district of Connecticut . There he took over from Augustine Lonergan of the Democratic Party on March 4, 1915 . But since he lost to Lonergan in the elections of 1916 and Lonergan regained his old seat, Oakey had to leave the Congress on March 3, 1917 after only one legislative period . After that he did not hold any other important political offices. Davis Oakey died in November 1920 and was buried in Hartford.
