George M. Landers

George Marcellus Landers (born February 22, 1813 in Lenox , Berkshire County , Massachusetts , †  March 27, 1895 in New Britain , Connecticut ) was an American politician . Between 1875 and 1879 he represented the first constituency of the state of Connecticut in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George Landers attended public schools in his home country. In 1830 he moved to New Britain, Connecticut. Assuming that New Britain would become a craft center in Connecticut, he became involved in the field. He founded a hardware company, on whose board he remained as president until his death. Politically, Landers became a member of the Democratic Party . He was a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives in 1851, 1867, and 1874 . He also sat in the State Senate in 1853, 1869 and 1873 . In 1874, Landers was state commissioner for the banking industry.

In the congressional election of 1874, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first district of Connecticut . There he took over from Republican Joseph R. Hawley on March 4, 1875 . After a re-election in 1876, Landers was able to complete two terms in Congress until March 3, 1879 . After serving in the US House of Representatives, Landers returned to his private business in New Britain. He died there on March 27, 1895.
