Alfred Noroton Phillips (born April 23, 1894 in Darien , Connecticut , †  January 18, 1970 in Stamford , Connecticut) was an American politician . Between 1937 and 1939 he represented the state of Connecticut in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Alfred Phillips attended the public schools in his home country as well as the Betts Academy in Stamford and the Hotchkiss School in Lakeville . He then studied at Yale University until 1917 . During the First World War he was used as a first lieutenant in the field artillery of the US Army in Europe. On his return he moved to Stamford. Until 1923 he was employed by the Charles H. Phillips Chemical Co. , where he had worked before the war. Then he published a newspaper in Darien. Politically, Phillips was a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1923 and 1936 he served as Mayor of Stamford several times. From 1928 to 1933 he was a major member of his state's National Guard . In 1919 he directed the American Legion veterans organization in Connecticut. Phillips was also a member of his party's state board.

In the 1936 congressional election, Phillips was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth constituency of Connecticut . There he took over from Republican Schuyler Merritt on January 3, 1937 . But since he already lost to Albert E. Austin in the following elections in 1938 , he was only able to complete one term in Congress until January 3, 1939 . During this time, more New Deal laws were passed in Congress.

After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, Phillips returned to his publishing activities in Darien. He also operating in Cecilton ( Maryland a dairy farm). Between 1942 and 1944, Phillips was a captain in the military police during World War II . He was used in North Africa. Alfred Phillips died on January 18, 1970 in Stamford and was buried in Cecilton.
