Jim Himes

James A. "Jim" Himes (born July 5, 1966 in Lima , Peru ) is an American politician . Since 2009 he has represented the state of Connecticut in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Jim Himes spent his early childhood in Peru, where his father worked for the Ford Foundation . After his parents divorced, he moved to New Jersey with his mother and two sisters . There he attended Hopewell Valley Central High School . Until 1988, Himes studied at Harvard University and then until 1990 at Oxford University in England .

After graduating from college, Himes worked in banking in Latin America and New York . Since 2003 he has worked for the non-profit organization Enterprise Foundation ; in 2007 he became its vice-president. Between 2003 and 2006, Himes also worked for the Connecticut Housing Authority . In 2006 and 2007, he was also a member of the Greenwich City Tax Assessment Board .

Himes is a member of the Democratic Party . In the 2008 congressional election , he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth constituency of Connecticut . There he took over from Republican Christopher Shays on January 3, 2009 , whom he defeated in the election. He was re-elected in the following elections. Re-elected in 2016, he will also serve in the 115th Congress of the United States , which will meet on January 3, 2017 . His new legislative period runs until January 3, 2019. Himes is or was in the meantime a member of the Finance Committee and the Internal Security Committee, as well as two sub-committees each.

Jim Himes lives privately with his wife Mary in Greenwich.
