Edmund George Knox , actually Edmund George Valpy Knox , (born May 10, 1881 , † January 2, 1971 ) was an English writer and editor.

Life

Knox was the eldest son of Edmund Arbuthnot Knox ; his brothers were the code breaker Dillwyn Knox , the monk Wilfred Knox and the Catholic priest Ronald Knox . Knox completed his schooling at King Edward's School in Birmingham ( West Midlands ) and at the Rugby School in Rugby ( Warwickshire ).

In 1912 Knox married Christina Frances Hicks (1885–1935) and had two children with her. He joined the Lincolnshire Regiment and took part in the First World War. In October 1917 he was wounded and returned home.

His first literary attempts came from his school days. However, Knox only achieved his literary breakthrough with his satirical contributions, which he was able to publish in the magazine " Punch ". A major sponsor was the illustrator Ernest Shepard , whose daughter Mary Knox married in 1937. Between 1932 and 1949 Knox acted as the responsible editor of the magazine "Punch".

Knox counted himself among the agnostics throughout his life ; but at the end of his life he again approached the Church of England .

reception

For most of his literary work, Knox used the pseudonym Evoe . In addition to his satirical works, he also wrote a number of poems; most of them probably during the Second World War . As a satirist, he mainly dealt with writers such as Edmund Blunden , Robert Bridges , John Drinkwater , Walter de la Mare , John Masefield and John Collin Squire .
