Benjamin Huntington
Benjamin Huntington (born April 19, 1736 in Norwich , Colony of Connecticut , † October 16, 1800 in Rome , New York ) was an American politician . Between 1789 and 1791 he represented the state of Connecticut in the US House of Representatives . Before that he was several times delegate to the Continental Congress between 1780 and 1788 .
Career
Benjamin Huntington grew up during the British colonial era and studied at Yale College after elementary school until 1761 . In October 1764 he became a surveyor in Windham County . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1765, he began working in this profession in his hometown of Norwich.
Huntington had been a Member of the Colonial House of Representatives since 1771. He joined the revolutionary movement and in 1775 became a member of the Connecticut Security Committee. He also remained a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives until 1780 ; in 1778 and 1779 he was its president . In January 1788 he was a delegate to a convention in New Haven . In 1780, 1782, 1783 and 1788 Huntington took part as a delegate at the Continental Congress. He was also a member of the Connecticut Senate from 1781 to 1790 and again from 1791 to 1793 . From 1784 to 1796 he was Mayor of Norwich. He was close to the pro- government movement ( Pro-Administration Party ), which later became the Federalist Party .
In the elections to the first Congress in 1789, Huntington was elected as a candidate of the pro-administration movement in the US House of Representatives, where he took the first seat of his state. In Congress , he completed only one legislative period between March 4, 1789 and March 3, 1791. Between 1793 and 1798 he was a judge in the Connecticut Superior Court . Benjamin Huntington died in Rome, New York, in October 1800. He was married to Anne Huntington, who died in 1790, since 1765.
