The fountain sanctuary of Milis ( Italian Pozzo sacro di Milis ) is located in Gallura , east of Olbia in the province of Sassari in Sardinia , about 300 m from the train station of Golfo Aranci above the town directly on the railway line. It dates from the Middle Bronze Age and was used through the Iron Age into the Middle Ages . The well was excavated in 1937 by Doro Levi , who only published a short report.

description

The monument was damaged during the construction of the railway line in the 19th century. No traces have been left of the vestibule or the irregular oval wall surrounding the monument. However, the fountain itself and the stairs are original. This part of the complex is built from regular rows of blocks of granite , limestone and slate . The approximately 9.5 m long and 1.5 m wide straight staircase consists of 40 steps. The covering of the stairs and the formation of the steps are unique in Sardinia and of particular architectural value. The very steep staircase leads to the oval well chamber (diameter 3.0 × 2.4 m). Her slender tholos (height 9.3 m) was originally over 11.0 m high.

Not far from Milis, in the direction of Olbia, is the restored Sa Testa fountain sanctuary .
