Elias Perkins

Elias Perkins (born April 5, 1767 in Newent Society , Colony of Connecticut , †  September 27, 1845 in New London , Connecticut ) was an American politician . Between 1801 and 1803 he represented the state of Connecticut in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Elias Perkins was born in 1767 in what is now Lisbon, Connecticut. He grew up during the British colonial era and experienced the War of Independence as a teenager . Until 1786 he studied at Yale College . After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began working in this profession in New London. Politically, Perkins became a member of the Federalist Party founded by Alexander Hamilton . Between 1795 and 1800 he was a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives . In 1798, he was to succeed David Daggett its President . In 1799 he was an associate district judge in New London County .

In the 1800 Congressional elections , held in Connecticut state-wide, Perkins was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC . There he completed a legislative period between March 4, 1801 and March 3, 1803. After serving in Congress , Perkins returned to practice as a lawyer. Between 1807 and 1825 he was presiding judge of the District Court in New London County. In 1814 and 1815 he was again a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives; from 1817 to 1822 he was also a member of the State Senate . His last political office was that of Mayor of New London, which he held between 1829 and 1832. Elias Perkins also died in this city in September 1845.
