James Davenport (politician)

James Davenport (born October 12, 1758 in Stamford , Colony of Connecticut , † August 3, 1797 ibid) was an American lawyer and politician ( Federal Party ).

Career

James Davenport was the younger brother of John Davenport (1752-1830), who held the sixth Connecticut seat in the US Congress between 1799 and 1817 . He attended Yale College until 1777 . During the War of Independence he was a soldier in the Continental Army . After the war he worked as a judge at an appeals court.

Politically, Davenport was a member of the Federalist Party . Between 1785 and 1790 he was a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives ; from 1790 to 1797 he was a member of the State Senate . He was also a district judge in Fairfield County between 1792 and 1796 . After the resignation of Congressman James Hillhouse , who moved to the US Senate , Davenport was elected as his successor to Congress in the due by-election, which was held nationwide. There he took the first seat of MPs from Connecticut on December 5, 1796, which he held until his death on August 3, 1797. After his death he was buried in North Field (now Franklin Street ) Cemetery.
