E. Stevens Henry

Edward Stevens Henry (born February 10, 1836 in Gill , Franklin County , Massachusetts , †  October 10, 1921 in Rockville , Connecticut ) was an American politician . Between 1895 and 1913 he represented the first constituency of the state of Connecticut in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Stevens Henry came to Rockville, Connecticut at a young age. There he attended public schools. Then he traded haberdashery. From 1870 until his death in 1921, also during his political activities, he was director of finance at the People's Saving Bank in Rockville.

Henry was a member of the Republican Party . In 1883 he was a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives , and from 1887 to 1888 he was a member of the State Senate . In 1888 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Chicago , where Benjamin Harrison was nominated as a presidential candidate. Henry was State Treasurer of Connecticut from 1889 to 1893 and served as Mayor of Rockville from 1894 to 1895.

In the congressional elections of 1894 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first district of Connecticut , where he succeeded Democrat Lewis Sperry on March 4, 1895 . After eight re-elections, he was able to complete a total of nine consecutive terms in Congress by March 3, 1913 . From 1907 to 1911 he was chairman of the committee to control spending on government real estate. In 1912, Henry declined to run again.

After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Stevens Henry returned to his private business in Rockville. He died there in October 1921.
