The Västerhejde Church (Västerhejde kyrka) is one of the few Swedish churches on Gotland , whose appearance, as in the churches of Fårö and Eksta , was changed considerably.

location

Västerhejde is 7 km south-west of Visby between road 140 from Visby to Klintehamn and road 142 from Visby to Hemse .

Church building

The renovation here only affects the comparatively high tower, which with its stepped gables was given a typically Danish design that was foreign to Gotland, although it was mostly made of red brick . A pointed tower dome was removed in 1856, after which the current tower top was created based on an idea by the architect Fredrik Wilhelm Scholander. The sacristy dates from 1884. The church is also a well-preserved Romanesque complex, which consists of a choir with apse and a rectangular nave with a flat ceiling. The tower area below the stepped gable is also still Romanesque. The choir and nave appear to have been built at the beginning of the 13th century, while the tower was added in the middle of the 13th century. The choir originally had a portal in the south wall, in the usual place . It was removed when the large window was added in the 1860s.

Facility

Interior with organ

The wooden altar panel shows a painted crucifixion in the middle, which according to the inscription was executed in 1662 and is attributed to Johan Bartsch. The pulpit and the rich with sculptures provided baptism of sandstone are also from the 17th century and was According to an inscription painted at the expense of the judge Oluf Lundberg 1672 and 1681 donated by the judge Oluf Lundberg. Most of the beautiful seating is from the same century. However, it was added in 1936 during a restoration. The unusually well-preserved organ loft in the tower chamber was made by Nils the carpenter in 1689 and, according to an inscription, painted in 1696, probably by "Johan Bartsch the Younger" and his son Rasmus. On the choir wall shows an oil painting, the Resurrection of Christ, signed by Fredrik Westin (1782–1862) with the year 1853; probably a donation from Princess Charlotta Eugenia Augusta Amalia Albertina (1830–1889), Eugenia for short, who lived in nearby Fridhem during the summer .

The old church bell is placed behind the altar. The words "PAS: TOR SVEN" can be read from the weathered inscription. This is probably identical to Sveno Petri Boetius, pastor of the mother parish of Stenkumla from 1659 to 1675.

The church was restored in 1936 according to plans by the architect Erik Fant.
