Hemse is after the capital Visby 's second largest city ( tätort ) on the Swedish island of Gotland in the province County of Gotland and the historical county of Gotland.

The town in Gotland is 45 kilometers south of the city of Visby as the crow flies , but it is about 50 kilometers on the winding road 142. In the 19th century the place Hemse was an important market place. There is a medieval church in Hemse . The stave church , which previously stood in the same place, has been partially reconstructed. The library in Hemse contains the Sonja Åkesson archive.

Land use

The area is predominantly used for agriculture and has small areas of forest. Part of the area consists of drained parts of the Mästermyr , Stånga myr and Rone myr moors .
