By merging the municipality of Visby, the market municipality of Slite and 12 rural municipalities in 1971, all municipalities in the Gotland County were combined into one. Its municipal council therefore also performs the tasks of the provincial parliament. In no other municipality in Sweden are the provincial and municipal levels combined. Since January 1, 2011 this municipality has been called Region Gotland .

The following larger towns ( tatorter ) belong to the municipality: Burgsvik , Fårösund , Havdhem , Hemse , Klintehamn , Lärbro , Ljugarn , Roma ( Roma monastery ) with Lövsta (see also Roma monastery ), Slite , Stånga , Tingstäde , Väskinde , Västerhejde , Vibble and Visby .

economy

Gotland is a traditional agricultural area where cattle breeding (around 3/4 of the agricultural income) dominates. Around four times as many people as the national average work in agriculture. In contrast, Gotland is an industrially weak area. Gotland has only 11 industrial companies with more than 50 employees. The capital goods industry and the food industry are the predominant branches of industry. The service sector has doubled over the past few decades. In addition to the public sector, tourism plays an important role.
