Kovik is one of the most famous fishing spots (Swedish: Gotländska fiskelägen) on the Swedish island of Gotland in the Gotland County and the historic Gotland Province.

Geographical location

Kovik is located on the west coast of Gotland 3.5 km northwest of Klintehamn and 27 km south of Visby on a narrow sandbank with bays on each side.

history

Early slips on the nearby country road as well as burial grounds suggest that the fishing spot already existed during the Viking Age (800-1050 AD). When it silted up, they pulled further out onto the headland . The youngest fishing spot on it dates from the 1930s.

In 1965 a beach chapel was built in memory of those who drowned in the struggle for existence. It is a simple structure made of stone and wood, similar to those found in the larger fishing spots Gnisvärd and Hallshuk .

Fishing Museum

Kovik is also known for its fishing museum. It is the work of the artist Erik Olsson, from Sanda , the farmer Edvin Olsson, from Norrgärda and the fisherman Helmer Larsson. The objects shown here demonstrate fishing culture from the time before motorization. 20 stalls from different parts of the island, 14 boats and over 700 other exhibits. One of the rarities is the “Fluntingebude” from Grötlingbo , a plank house with a slate roof . The protruding roof and the low door in the gable give the building its ancient character. At the various fishermen's huts, light sticks or fires show the way to the fishing spot, even in the dark. Here is the reconstruction of an older type of stone lighthouse in which the fire was kept on open stone slabs. Next to the fishing spot are reconstructed slips that show how the boats used to be pulled ashore. Within the area there are also “net gardens” in which the fishermen dried nets.
