Meaning had Roma both as Thingplace for Central Gotland, and later as the site of the Roma monastery , which in 1164 by the Cistercians was founded and located about midway between Roma and Lövsta (Roma kyrkby). Later, the place was an important junction of the narrow-gauge railways on Gotland , which were shut down in the 1960s.

The local sugar factory , which closed in 1997, was one of the largest industrial operations on the island. Today there is a whiskey distillery here . The “Isle of Lime” whiskey has been distilled here since 2004. The distillery can be visited.

To the confusion with the Italian name of Rome to avoid using Romakloster for the mailing address. This name is also the official name of the Statistiska centralbyrån for the crime scene.
