The railways on Gotland were almost exclusively narrow-gauge railways with 891 mm gauge . Scheduled operations on the Swedish island of Gotland ran from the opening of the first line in 1878 until the 1960s. The railways were built by several companies and taken over by the Swedish state railway Statens Järnvägar in 1947 . Roma became the central point of the network .

There was also a private industrial railway in Bläse, which was built with a gauge of 600 mm, as well as other short field railways for the transport of lime (e.g. from Stux to Strå on Fårösund north of Bunge and on Furillen ).

stretch

The first concessionaire was Gotlands Järnväg (GJ) in 1876 :

  • The first Gotland route led from Visby via Roma to Hemse (GJ, Visby – Roma - 21 km, Roma – Hemse - 34 km).
  • This route was then extended in the south and north to a total of 117 km and finally led from Burgsvik to Lärbro over two thirds of the length of the island (Visby – Lärbro 36 km and Hemse – Burgsvik 24 km).

The company Klintehamn-Roma Järnväg (KlRJ) provided the connection to the west coast of Roma :

  • The first addition was made in 1898 with the 22.9 km long cross-link between Klintehamn and Roma .

The company Slite-Roma Järnväg (SlRJ) was formed for a further route :

The company Sydvästra Gotlands Järnväg (SGJ) took care of the further extension to Hablingbo :

The Ronehamn-Hemse Järnväg (RHJ) company built a branch line from Hemse to the southeast coast :

Visby-Västerhejde Järnväg (VVJ):

Klintehamn Järnväg (KlinteJVG):

There were also concessions for the Slite – Fårösund and Klintebys – Snögrinda sections - but these lapsed because the lines were not built.

Current operation

A museum train has been running in Dalhem in the center of the island since 1974 . The Gotlands Hesselby Jernväg runs between the two train stations Hesselby and Roma on a rebuilt section of the former Slite-Roma Järnväg .

As an industrial line for the transport of limestone, the railway line Bläse kalkbrottet – Bläse hamnen with a gauge of 600 mm was opened in the north of the island in 1893 . The line was in operation until 1954, and in 1972 it was dismantled. Today, museum trains run there on the newly built tracks.
