The radar station on Furillen 1967 |
Furillen or Furilden is an island off the northeast coast of the Swedish island of Gotland . It is said that the name Furilden comes from the fact that the whole island is said to have burned over 500 years ago. The limestone industry was located there until the 1970s. The island of Furillen was a restricted military area until well into the 1990s, where the radar stations R130 Katten (cat) and later R236 Bonsen , where bons is pronounced like båns and sometimes also spelled, which is a Gotland word for “hangover”. These have now been processed. Furillen has a land connection to the coast at Lergrav .
The old factory buildings of the limestone industry are now used as a stylish hotel with conference facilities, the Hotel Fabriken Furillen. The island is now often used for various fashion, music or advertising events. Most of the island (500 hectares) belongs to the photographer and entrepreneur Johan Hellström, who also runs the hotel factories.
Today an area of 1.3 km² in the north of Furillen is a nature reserve and Natura 2000 area.
