Rdio was a music streaming service of the American Rdio Inc. of the same name, based in Potrero Hill, San Francisco .
history
Rdio was founded by Skype founders Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis and Carter Adamson. Zennström and Friis were also the originators of the Kazaa exchange . The private beta test phase ended on August 3, 2010. The service officially started on January 11, 2012 in Germany. The company was financed by the venture capital providers Atomico (Niklas Zennström), Janus Friis, Mangrove Capital Partners and Skype.
On November 16, 2015, the company announced that it would file for bankruptcy and agreed to sell “technology and design solutions to Pandora” with US company Pandora and that many employees would receive offers from Pandora as part of the deal; the company under the name Rdio was discontinued soon afterwards. According to the Wall Street Journal , Rdio only had 98,000 paying customers in the US at the end of 2014.
After the service continued for a while, it was finally discontinued and redirected to "Pandora Internet Radio".

The service was available in 51 countries including Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the UK and the USA. Paying customers can also use the service abroad.
Functions
Music catalog
The music offer included content from all major labels . According to the company's own information, the number of available titles was over 25 million songs. The repertoire was constantly expanded with new labels. The music catalog could be searched for artists, songs, albums and labels. In addition, the music heard on Last.fm could be " scrobbled ". New music could be found through the “ Heavy Rotation ”, among other things , it showed personalized music recommendations and music that friends would like to hear. There were also top charts and a list of new releases.
Playlists
The user could create playlists and share them with friends. These music playlists could be edited together with other users. In addition, playlists could be subscribed to in order to receive notifications when new songs were added.
Community
There was also an online community that allowed users to share and follow others to see what music they were listening to.

Web browser
The complete service was also available as a web-based variant. The installation of a program was therefore not absolutely necessary.

There were also apps for iOS , Android , Blackberry and Windows Phone . These could stream and sync music so that it can be heard offline. There were also applications for Roku and Sonos systems.

With software version 5.9, Rdio in the Tesla Model S became the standard music streaming service in Europe, with data being transmitted via 3G or WiFi, depending on the possibility. In the USA, slacker was used instead.
Accounts and Subscriptions
The service offered two options for use as standard in Germany. The web package only included the use of the web application and was set at five euros per month. The Unlimited package included the use of the web application and the mobile apps, for which Rdio charges ten euros per month. The service could be tested in Germany for a fortnight before choosing one of the two variants.
In 15 nations, users were able to use the service free of charge for six months, but with a limited number of streams. Germany was excluded from this action.
Family plan
There was also a “Family Plan” that only applies to Unlimited packages. Two accounts cost 18 euros per month and three accounts 23 euros. Since June 24, 2013, up to five family members have been able to use the service at a reduced price.
criticism
Rdio received mostly positive reviews from critics. The clear and modern user interface was praised. However, it was criticized that the user cannot hear his own music with Rdio .
The Stiftung Warentest announced in the magazine test that Rdio with over 40 clauses in the general terms and conditions would disadvantage the user inadmissibly and would be ineffective. For example, Rdio excludes any liability if there is a memory error due to a technical defect and the user loses his music collection as a result.
Vdio
On April 2, 2013, Rdio launched Vdio , a movie and TV show streaming service. However, there was no limit to the number of films that could be watched; instead, each individual film had to be paid for. The service closed on December 27, 2013.
