The Ronehamn – Hemse (RHJ) railway was a narrow-gauge railway line on the Swedish island of Gotland . It had a track width of 891 millimeters.
history
The Ronehamn - Hemse line was built by the Ronehamn-Hemse Järnvägsaktiebolag . The reason for the construction was to improve the transport options for sugar beets to the sugar factory in Roma . Construction began in 1900 and was completed in 1902. Unofficial trains on the route were already running for the sugar beet campaign in 1901. On February 15, 1903, the route was officially opened for freight traffic . Passenger traffic was only started on May 1, 1904 with a used steam powered rail car that was acquired by Vikbolandsbanan . In addition, trains were driven with a steam locomotive and a passenger car.
In addition to the terminus, train stations in Antsarve and Mattsarve were built. The line was with rails with a weight per meter built by 15 kilograms per meter. In addition to the ten kilometers of mainline track, 1.3 kilometers of side tracks were also built.
In 1917, the timetable for the route contained a daily pair of passenger trains that took 30 minutes to cover the ten kilometer route.
Due to the poor financial situation, the management asked the king in the same year to dismantle the tracks and sell the existing equipment. On June 3, 1918, Ronehamn – Hemse Järnvägsaktiebolag went bankrupt . The officially no longer operated line was auctioned in January 1919, but unofficial trains were still running until the tracks were demolished. Strong protests from the population were directed against the demolition of the line in August 1920. In September 1920 a trial began in court to prevent the dismantling. However, the entire route was dismantled during the process.
