MiniPCI and MiniPCI Express cards in comparison

PCI Express Mini Card is the successor to the Mini PCI plug-in card format for notebooks. The standard is based on PCI Express and is being developed by PCI-SIG. The interface supports PCI Express and USB 2.0 connections as well as USB 3.0 connections. Each card uses the connection that the card manufacturer deems most appropriate for the task.

format

PCI-Express mini cards have a size of 30 mm × 50.95 mm and have a 52-pin connector. There is also a smaller card format with a size of 30 mm × 26.80 mm. Then one speaks of "half size", in German "half size".

Electrical connections

In addition to a PCIe lane and the USB 2.0 signal, various other signals can be transmitted via the plug connection.

  • System Management Bus - two-wire bus for module communication
  • Diagnostic LEDs for status displays of WWAN , WLAN and WPAN cards
  • SIM card for GSM , UMTS and LTE WWAN adapters (the SIM cards are often installed separately in a more accessible location)
  • 1.5 and 3.3 volt power supply

Availability

SSD as a PCI Express mini plug-in card

Most newer notebooks (from 2005) are based on PCI Express and have slots for PCI Express mini cards. Most notebooks are equipped with PCI-Express mini plug-in cards for WLAN or solid state drives , whereby the SSDs in PCI Express mini plug-in card format are a proprietary extension of the PCI Express mini standard by one SATA port (for example mini-SATA ).
