Tofta is a crime scene on the Swedish island of Gotland or in the province of Gotland County , 15 km south of Visby . The church of Tofta is in the village .

Tofta is also eponymous for the parish ( Swedish socken ) Tofta. The place was designated as a crime scene for the first time in 2015 and includes, in addition to the former Småort Tofta, the two Småorte Tofta Strand Norra and Tofta Strand Södra (corresponding to "Tofta Strand Nord" and "Süd").

Population and area

Tofta had 627 inhabitants in 2015. The population and area of ​​the former Småorte were as of December 31, 2010: Tofta 73 inhabitants and 30 ha, Tofta Strand Norra 126 inhabitants and 18 ha, Tofta Strand Södra 186 inhabitants and 1 km². The latter belongs to the parish of Eskelhem.

The parish of Tofta had 643 inhabitants and 38.19 km², of which 38.18 km² are land area.

The parish of Tofta extends to the west coast of Gotland. It consists of arable land in the east and wooded areas with cliffs and a large sandy beach in the west. There is a large proportion of holiday homes, especially in the area around Gnisvärd , Smågarde and Tofta strand, but there is also an increasing number of permanent residents who often work in Visby.

Tofta Strand Norra was home to the Vikingabyn Museum until 2015 .

Archaeological sites

In the parish of Tofta there are several residential areas from the Stone Age . There are several roes and ship settlements from the Bronze Age , of which the ship settlements at Gnisvärd are the best known. From the Iron Age , there are 23 grave fields, stone paths ( Swedish stensträng ) sliprännestenar , an image block and a Wallburg ( Swedish fornborg ). Runic carvings are present and known near the church.

Surname

The name Thophtu from 1304 contains toft , which could perhaps be translated as “rowing bench” ( Swedish “roddarbänk” ), but this interpretation is quite uncertain.
