The Church of Tofta (Swedish: Tofta kyrka ) is a country church on the Swedish island of Gotland . It belongs to the parish (Swedish församling ) Tofta-Eskelhem in the diocese of Visby .

location

The church is located in Småort Tofta in western Gotland, east of road 140 from Visby to Klintehamn . It is located 15 km south of Visby, 15 km north of Klintehamn and 17 km west of Roma .

Church building

An older church from the 12th century stood in the same place before the current church was built. The foundations of the old church are under the floor of today's churches. Likewise, the tower from 1280, arranged in the west, was already part of the older church and was integrated into the current one and also raised. The nave and the choir in the east date from the middle of the 14th century (approx. 1325–1375) in their current form. They were built together and stylistically form a unit. The nave has two aisles. The sacristy on the north side was only added in 1881. In 1958/1959 the church was renovated.

Furnishing

The sandstone baptismal font from the 12th century is attributed to the Semi-Byzantios. The reliefs on it reveal scenes from the birth of Jesus.

In the church, in the south-east corner of the nave, there is a stone figure depicting Saint Olaf, who is believed to have brought Christianity to Gotland. Opposite is an altar of Mary.

Surroundings

At the fishing village of Gnisvärd there is a simple chapel built in stone in 1839 with a rectangular floor plan. It replaced a wooden chapel. Between this fishing village and the church are the ship settlements at Gnisvärd .
