Ernst von Vegesack

Ernst Mattias Peter von Vegesack (born June 18, 1820 in Hemse , Gotland, † January 12, 1903 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish member of parliament and volunteer in the Civil War .

Life

Ernst von Vegesack belonged to the Swedish nobility . In 1840 he was appointed army officer of the Gotlands nationalbeväring and in 1842 he was transferred to the Dalregementet . He was trained as a surveying technician and worked in the Swedish district of Dalarnas Lan until 1850 . In 1852 he was transferred to the island of Saint-Barthélemy , which at the time was a Swedish colonial property.

After his return to Sweden he took over command of the Dalregementet. At the same time he was appointed inspector of Sweden's first major railway line in Gävle-Dala.

In 1861 he joined the American Army to support the Northern States after the outbreak of the Civil War in the United States . He was involved in many battles and was appointed Brigadier General for it in 1865.

In Sweden he was given command of the Västerbottens regemente in 1864 . The following year he was married to Edla Amalia Sergel .

From 1874 to 1884 he was the military commander of Gotland . He then took over the command of the 5th military district of Sweden until his retirement in 1888. From 1879 to 1887 Vegesack sat in the Swedish Reichstag as Gotland's delegate.
