Donationware

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Donationware (from English donation "donation" and ware "goods") is a variant of freeware . The software can be used without restrictions, but the author asks for a donation of any amount to compensate for the costs arising from further development or distribution of the software (for example server costs). If the source code of the software is also available, Donationware may also meet the criteria for free software .

Demarcation

Shareware is a stricter form of license . Although it allows the distribution of a version that is often restricted in use, it only offers full functionality after the software has been purchased.

More free license forms are:

  • Beerware allows free use, but the author asks if you like to donate a beer or something similar.
  • Charityware allows free use, but the author asks if you like a donation for a good cause.
  • Cardware is freeware in which the author expects the user to send a postcard.
  • Commentware is freely available, but you are asked to comment on the program (similar to beta tests ).
  • Copyleft only restricts the rights from free software in that derivative works must grant equal freedoms.
  • Freeware is software that is made available by the author free of charge.
  • Free software allows you to use it for any purpose, to copy it, study it, change it and redistribute it.
  • Linkware asks for a link to the author's website when it is used or liked.
  • Public domain means that the author completely waives his rights. Legal rights and obligations may vary from country to country.
