Church building

The medieval stone church consists of a nave , a church tower in the west, a narrower, straight-end choir in the east and a sacristy on the north side. The oldest masonry is in the tower that belonged to a Romanesque church around 1200 , the foundations of which were found during an excavation in connection with the restoration from 1953 to 1954 and the direction of the architect Ragnar Jonsson . This earlier church had reliefs in the facades and was, like the Vänge, a so-called iconic church (Swedish "ikonisk kyrka"). Part of the relief has been walled into today's nave. Around 1300 the current nave, the choir and the sacristy were built in the Gothic style. Both the nave and the choir have magnificent perspective portals in the south, which are eye-catching. There is a Romanesque window frame above the nave portal. The large window openings are ogival. The east wall is broken through by a group of three windows. The relatively low tower is crowned by an octagonal spire that offers space for a bell storey. A round arch portal is located on the north side of the tower. From the inside, the wide nave is covered by two tent vaults that are supported by two large pilasters . A wide, ogival wall opening leads into the choir, which is covered by a tent vault. A medieval iron-studded door leads into the sacristy, which is covered with a barrel vault .
