location

The church is located in the interior of the island on the north side of Gotland's largest river, Gothemsån . It is located 20 km east of Visby, 10 km northeast of Roma and 21 km southwest of Slite .

Church building

The medieval stone church consists of a rectangular nave , a church tower in the west, a narrower, straight-end choir in the east and a sacristy on the north side of the choir. The tower, built in the first half of the 13th century, comes from an earlier Romanesque church with an apse that stood in the same place. The present choir and sacristy were built towards the end of the 13th century. The nave was added in the first half of the 14th century. The tower has round-arched sound openings, while the nave has pointed-arched windows. The south portal of the nave with narrative reliefs is one of the most interesting on Gotland. It is believed to have originated in the workshop of master stonemason Egypticus from the 14th century. A slender central pillar supports the four vaults of the nave. Pointed-arch wall openings connect the nave with the tower room and the choir. During the restoration under the direction of the architect Arne Philips from 1979 to 1980, the medieval lime paintings in the nave and choir were exposed. The wall paintings in the nave are attributed to a 14th century Egyptian painter and the paintings in the choir to the Passion Master . In the south window of the choir and in the nave window there are remains of medieval stained glass, probably from the 14th century. The east window has modern stained glass from 1906. The church was restored in 1937 according to plans by the architect Erik Fant .

Furnishing

  • The pulpit was made by Jochim Sterling in 1688 .
  • A triumphal cross from the 1440s hangs on the north wall of the nave. The cross itself was added later.
  • The altar has wooden sculptures from the 14th century. The framing was added in 1701.
  • The oak font is from 1730.
  • The pews date from the 17th and 18th centuries.
  • Today's organ was made in 1981 by Johannes Menzel Orgelbyggeri from Härnösand .

Surroundings

  • The cemetery in Hörsne has been expanded several times. Its original extent is still preserved in the east and west.
  • To the north of the church is a two-story stone building. This is a parish magazine that probably dates from the early 19th century.
  • During excavations in 1924 foundations were found that are believed to belong to a medieval defense tower (Swedish kastal ).
