Passion master

A medieval painter who created wall paintings in the 15th century, especially in country churches on the Swedish Baltic Sea island of Gotland , is known as the Passion Master . The artist, who is not known by name, is named after his depictions of the life and suffering of Christ, the Passion . His unusual, almost idiosyncratic depictions of the scenes often run like a frieze along the walls of the nave. The Passion Master is one of a number of painters who created murals on Gotland in the Middle Ages .

The Passion Master shows understanding for the " sinful " mistakes of people. In his pictures in Linde , for example, he depicts chattering women, distracted by the devil from the right path because they do not follow the service. Above them a demon writes their offense in the register of sins. An angel then wields a club to protect the women who have returned to prayer from further harassment by the powers of hell and thus teaches them about the possibilities of forgiveness through the church.
