The Church of Fide ( Swedish Fide kyrka ) is a country church that belongs to the parish (Swedish församling ) Fide.

location

It is located in the south of the Swedish island of Gotland on a narrow isthmus that connects the southernmost part of the island with the rest. It is 62 km south of Visby , 18 km south of Hemse and 5.5 km north of Burgsvik. From the church tower you can see the sea to the west and east.

Church building and churchyard

The church is made of sandstone , like many of the churches in the south of Gotland, and has a rough character. It consists of a just completed choir , a wider and higher nave and a very sturdy tower in the west, which is considerably wider than the nave. There are portals in the nave and choir in the south and in the tower in the north. The church has windows in the east, west and south, but not in the north wall. The choir and nave were probably built together in the first half of the 13th century and the tower in the middle of the 13th century. It originally had a gable crown in every direction and probably a high point; but it was lowered in 1826 and given today's blunt lantern hood . The church has Romanesque portals with simple borders in the south ; the north portal is Gothic . All windows are still original. On the north outside of the nave there is a strange carving from the Middle Ages in the plaster. The interior of the church has a well-preserved Romanesque architecture.

The churchyard has retained much of its medieval character. Three small entrance gates with stepped gables have been preserved in the north and south.

Furnishing

The lime paintings come from the Othems master (Othemsmästare) from the 15th century. At the beginning of the 13th century, a ship was scratched into the plaster of the church. This ocean-going ship has a stern rudder , whereas previously only rudder was known.

The large triumphal cross , which almost fills the triumphal arch in the shape of a ring cross , dates from the 13th century. The altar was created in the 15th century. The pulpit is dated to 1587, making it one of the oldest on Gotland. In the inner niche of the north portal there is still a medieval holy water font made of limestone.
