Boge Church

The Church of Boge ( Swedish Boge kyrka ) is a Gothic country church on the Swedish island of Gotland . It belongs to the parish (swed. Församling ) Othem-Boge in the diocese of Visby .

location

The church, along with a few courtyards, is on the plain next to the former inlet and today's Lake Bogeviken near the east coast of Gotland, 28 km northeast of Visby and 3 km southwest of Slite .

Church building

The church is made of limestone and consists of a straight final choir with a steep roof, a square nave , the flatter roof of which is connected to the roof of the choir at ridge height , and a closed tower in the west. The top of the tower contains the bell storey with sound openings that are shielded by a roof. A strong buttress supports the southwest corner of the nave. The south facade has two entrances, a nave portal with crowning gable decorations, which forms the main entrance, and a choir portal. Another portal was restored on the north side of the nave. A sacristy is built into the north side of the choir. The choir and the tower room are covered by individual vaults. The nave has four vaults that are grouped around a central column. The sacristy has a barrel vault . Due to the wide triumphal arch , the wide choir and the square nave form a coherent church space.

history

The choir with its original group of three windows in the east and the sacristy were added to an older nave in the middle of the 13th century, the gable of which is partially preserved in the current triumphal arch wall. Towards the end of the 13th century, the nave was built up to the west tower of the older church. This tower collapsed in 1858, tearing the nave vault with it. Shortly afterwards, the support structure was bricked up. Construction of the new tower began in 1867 and was completed in 1892. In 1925 the nave vault and the column in the middle were reconstructed. The large south portal with the naturalistic vegetation decoration was added in the middle of the 14th century. The furnishings date in their entirety from the 18th century.
