former bay, used as a harbor during the Viking Age. |
Lake Bogeviken is the fourth largest lake on the Swedish island of Gotland . The name still shows that it is a former bay. During the Viking Age there was a navigable connection to the sea, and Bogeviken was used as a port by the Vikings. It has the hoarding Spillings found a silver treasure from this period that includes coins from different parts of Europe and the Middle East.
location
Bogeviken is located in northeast Gotland, 30 km northeast of Visby and directly west of Slite and east of the church of Boge .
Today's connection to the sea
There is a connection to the sea via seven watercourses ( Swedish Sju strömmar ), which run under the road 147 from Visby to Slite. At least one of them was probably created naturally, but it is believed that some of them were artificially created, most recently around 1500. West of the road, a dam with several culverts, which once supported the Slite – Roma railway , runs through the lake . Since these connections not only drain water, but also, to a certain extent, seawater can penetrate the lake, it has brackish water .
