Look into the church

The Church of Lummelunda is a country church that belongs to the parish (Swedish. Församling ) Stenkyrka on the Swedish island of Gotland . It is located in the village and in the parish ( Swedish socken ) Lummelunda , 18 km north of Visby near the west coast of the island. The church was consecrated in the 13th century.

Church building

The church was built of limestone in the Middle Ages . It consists of a Romanesque nave , a church tower in the west, a sacristy in the north and a large Gothic choir in the east, which makes the church a saddle church . The nave and the tower were built around 1200, at that time perhaps with a smaller choir. Towards the middle of the 14th century a major renovation was started, through which the whole church was to be renewed and enlarged; but only the choir managed to execute. The date of the sacristy is unclear, but it is believed that it was completed in 1739 at the latest. The spire is from 1636.

The different building epochs are particularly evident in the south portal: the Romanesque round arch portal of the nave and the Gothic pointed arch portal with sculptures in the capital band . The windows of the nave were changed in the 17th and 19th centuries. The group of three windows in the east wall of the choir is still original. The earliest change in the interior took place towards the end of the 13th century when the tower arch was expanded and received its current shape with painted ornaments. During the restoration carried out by the architect Åke Porne in 1960/1961, a western gallery was removed and the font was placed in the arch of the tower, the paintings of which were exposed. At the same time, the nave received its angled concrete roof (with cloud decor by artist Harald Norrby 1989). This replaced a makeshift flat wooden ceiling that cut off the pointed triumphal arch of the choir. The choir is covered by a tent vault, which has an octagonal shape with its curved diagonals. The oldest frescoes are from 1250 and decorate the tower arch. There are frescoes from the 15th century that are attributed to the Passion Master in the choir (Last Judgment) and in the nave.
