A saddle church (also Saum- or Tragsattelkirche) is a special type of church. Characteristic for churches of this form is the presence of a steeple at both ends of the building. On the west as well as on the east side there is sometimes a tower, often a choir that is significantly higher than the nave , which gives the church the silhouette of a saddle . The result is often the result of modifications and not a uniform concept.

Churches of this type were built during the Romanesque period or through renovations during the Gothic period , especially on the Swedish Baltic Sea islands of Öland and Gotland . But they are not typical of the islands.

In later building history, the second tower was often dismantled. The church of Resmo was one of the saddle churches, the former eastern tower of which is only in its basement. The churches of Burs , Garde , Follingbo , Lummelunda , Källunge and Lye also have a choir, which is significantly higher than the nave .

In Central European architectural history, the term saddle church is used for the height ratio of the main nave to the side aisles.
