The Church of Fårö ( Swedish Fårö kyrka ) is a country church on the Swedish island of Fårö in Gotland . It belongs to the parish (swed. Församling ) Fårö in the pastorate Bunge in the diocese of Visby . The film director Ingmar Bergman is buried in the church cemetery.

location

The church is located about in the middle of the island of Fårö , next to the main road from Visby on Gotland , to the eastern tip of Fårö (Fårö Fyr), 58 kilometers northeast of Visby.

Church building

The church building resembles many churches on mainland Sweden, but unlike most Gotland churches, Fårö Church has undergone major changes since the Middle Ages . In 1858 the church was no longer big enough and a transept was built to the north and south. This made the church twice as big and gave it its current appearance.

The oldest parts of the church are the tower and nave , which were built at the beginning of the 14th century. In the middle of the 18th century, the steeple had to be rebuilt after being destroyed by a lightning strike.

inventory

  • The font was made in the 12th century. In contrast to many other Gotland baptismal fonts, it has almost no decorations.
  • The processional crucifix dates from around 1400.
  • The altarpiece dates from the late 17th century.
  • There are two so-called Kutatavlan in the church . "Kuta" means " seal " and Tavlan means "table" in Old Gutnian . The larger panel dates from 1618 and describes in words and pictures a seal hunt in 1603, during which the hunters were driven out to sea on an ice floe, from where they were only rescued after two weeks. On the left edge is the oldest image of the Visborg Fortress . The smaller plate describes a seal hunt from 1767 with Jöns Langhammar and his son Lars, who were driven away on an ice floe but were rescued by the neighbors.
  • A rune stone is kept in the church , which was discovered during repair work on the chimney complex of the Langhammar court and which tells of the building up of the fireplaces.
