action
Benjamin Purvis, a slightly bizarre outsider, lives with his mother, a nightdress designer, in Utah. Both have hardly any money and Benjamin works as a temporary worker in his mother's shop, where she sells her collections with little success.
Taught at home, Benjamin has little relation to the real world and often takes refuge in adventures in distant worlds. He dreams of a career as a science fiction writer. To his greatest idol, the science fiction legend Dr. To meet Ronald Chevalier, he goes to the Cletus Festival, an authoring workshop for aspiring sci-fi writers. With his latest work "Hefe Lords - The Bronco Years" in his pocket, he is hoping for his big chance there. On the bus trip, he met Tabatha Jenkins, who is a budding author of French romance novels, and Lonnie Donaho, a young director of low-budget films who has already made more than 80 films with his “studio”. At the festival, Chevalier announces the prospective authors the chance of a lifetime: Everyone can submit their best manuscript , which will be judged by a jury that includes Chevalier. The best manuscript will be published in book form and Chevalier himself will do an illustration for it. Benjamin hopefully submits his "Hefe Lords" manuscript, but has to leave early to help his mother. What he doesn't know: Chevalier, who suffers from writer's block, is so enthusiastic about the manuscript that he submits it to his publisher as his own work after changing the names of the protagonists . Under the title "The Chronicles of Brutus and Balzaak" he published Benjamin's manuscript as his new novel , which celebrated great success and saved Chevalier's career.
Benjamin's mother, who wants to cheer up her depressed son, provides him with a rather questionable “guardian angel”. Lonnie decides to use Benjamin's fabric. He wants to make a feature film out of the script , but changes it so much that Benjamin leaves the "business". The story of Bronco / Brutus is shown in parallel in three different versions. Benjamin still watches the premiere of the film in the cinema. He leaves the cinema disappointed with the implementation of his material. Tabatha follows him and by chance they both discover Chevalier's novel version of “Hefe Lords” in a bookshop . Benjamin is shocked but knows that nobody will believe him. He is even initially accused of plagiarism because he allegedly made a film script from Chevalier's novel. When Benjamin then realizes that the check he received from Lonnie for his manuscript will not be valid until next year, he has hit a rock bottom. After an incident with a potential customer for his mother's designer goods, however, a turning point comes: Benjamin, furious, drives to a library where Chevalier is giving a book signing for fans of "his" new novel and confronts him there. Chevalier fends off all allegations and is then put down by him.
Benjamin, who is now in custody sits, is visited by his mother. As it turns out, it's Benjamin's birthday. His mother reveals to him that she has patented all of the works he has written with the Writers' Guild. With the already patented version of "Hefe Lords" Benjamin has the decisive proof of his innocence in hand and is now publishing "Hefe Lords" as his first novel. With the money he earns, he enables his mother to have a fashion show where she can show her new collection “Modest Beginnings”.
