John S. Monagan

John Stephen Monagan (born December 23, 1911 in Waterbury , Connecticut , †  October 23, 2005 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1959 and 1973 he represented the state of Connecticut in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Monagan attended the public schools of his home country and then studied until 1933 at Dartmouth College in Hanover ( New Hampshire ). After studying at the law school of Harvard University and his admission as a lawyer in 1938, he began to practice in Waterbury in his new profession.

Monagan was a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1940 and 1943 he was a member and chairman of the Waterbury City Council; from 1943 to 1948 he was mayor of this city. He also became a member of the Board of Directors of Waterbury Savings Bank . In 1944, 1948, 1960, 1964 and 1968 Monagan was a delegate to the respective Democratic National Conventions .

1958 Monagan was in the fifth constituency elected by Connecticut in the US House of Representatives in Washington. There he took over on January 3, 1959, succeeding Republican James T. Patterson , whom he had defeated in the election. After six re-elections, he was able to complete seven consecutive terms in Congress by January 3, 1973 . The civil rights movement and the Vietnam War took place during this period . In the 1972 elections, Monagan was defeated by Republican Ronald A. Sarasin . After that he worked as a lawyer again. He died in Washington in October 2005.
