Edwin H. May

Edwin Hyland May (born May 28, 1924 in Hartford , Connecticut , † February 20, 2002 in Fort Pierce , Florida ) was an American politician . Between 1957 and 1959 he represented the first constituency of the state of Connecticut in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Edwin May attended Wethersfield High School until 1942 . His further training was interrupted by the Second World War, in which he took part in the US Army Air Corps between 1942 and 1945 . After the war he continued his studies at Wesleyan University in Middletown until 1948 . He then started working in the insurance industry.

Politically, May was a member of the Republican Party . In the congressional elections of 1956 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first district of Connecticut , where he succeeded Democrat Thomas J. Dodd on January 3, 1957 . But since he lost to Emilio Q. Daddario in the following elections in 1958 , he was only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until January 3, 1959 .

Between 1958 and 1962 May was the Republican Party leader in Connecticut. In 1962 he ran unsuccessfully for his party's nomination for gubernatorial elections . In 1965 May was a delegate to a meeting to revise the Connecticut state constitution; in 1968 he unsuccessfully sought his party's nomination for the US Senate . After that, he no longer appeared politically. Edwin May died in Florida on February 20, 2002.
