Christopher Scott "Chris" Murphy (born August 3, 1973 in White Plains , New York ) is an American politician . Since January 3, 2013 he sits for the state of Connecticut in the United States Senate . From 2007 to 2013 he represented Connecticut in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Chris Murphy attended Wethersfield High School in Connecticut and then until 1996 Williams College in Williamstown ( Massachusetts ) with a stay in 1994/1995 at Exeter College in Oxford ( England ). After studying law at the University of Connecticut , he worked as a lawyer in Southington from 2002 .

As a member of the Democratic Party , Murphy was a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives from 1999 to 2003 ; from 2003 to 2006 he was a member of the State Senate . In the 2006 congressional elections Murphy was in the fifth constituency elected by Connecticut in the US House of Representatives. There he succeeded Nancy Johnson on January 3, 2007 , whom he had defeated in the election, and was re-elected twice. There he was a member of the Energy and Trade Committee and the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform . Murphy is committed to environmental protection and health care reform ( Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act ).

In January 2011, Murphy announced that he was running in the 2012 election for the mandate of the no longer-running US Senator Joe Lieberman . Murphy received 55.1 percent of the vote in the November 2012 election and Linda McMahon (Republican) 43.3 percent. He took over from Lieberman in January 2013. The term of office runs until January 3, 2019.

Since the rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School in December 2012, Murphy has campaigned for a reform of the laws that allow private individuals to own firearms. Among other things, after the mass murder in Las Vegas in 2017, he renewed his criticism.

Murphy and his wife Cathy have a son born in 2008. You live in Cheshire .
