John R. Buck

John Ransom Buck (born December 6, 1835 in Glastonbury , Connecticut , †  February 6, 1917 in Hartford , Connecticut) was an American politician . Between 1881 and 1883 and from 1885 to 1887 he represented the first constituency of the state of Connecticut in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Buck attended the public schools of his home country and then the Wilbraham Academy in Massachusetts and Wesleyan University in Middletown . He then worked as a teacher himself for some time. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1862, he began to practice his new profession in Hartford. Between 1864 and 1865 he was employed in the administration of the Connecticut House of Representatives ; a year later he worked in the administration of the State Senate . In 1868 he was Chairman of Hartford City Council. Between 1871 and 1873 he was the legal representative and from 1873 to 1881 treasurer of this city.

Buck was a member of the Republican Party . From 1880 to 1881 he was State Senator. In the congressional elections of 1880 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first district of Connecticut , where he succeeded Joseph R. Hawley on March 4, 1881 . Since he was defeated by the Democrat William W. Eaton in the elections of 1882 , he was initially only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1883 . Two years later, John Buck was able to win back his old seat in Congress in the congressional elections and replace Eaton on March 4, 1885. He remained in the US House of Representatives for another term until March 3, 1887. In 1886 he lost to the Democrat Robert J. Vance .

After leaving Congress, John Buck retired from politics. He worked again as a lawyer in Hartford, where he died in February 1917.
