Charles Magnette
Charles Magnette (born February 3, 1863 in Virton , Wallonia , Belgium , † October 18, 1937 in Liege , Wallonia, Belgium) was a Belgian liberal politician who was a member of both chambers of the Federal Parliament and President of the Belgian Senate .
biography
After attending school, he studied law and was after his promotion to law doctorate as a lawyer working. As a supporter of the progressive liberalism of Paul Janson , he was one of the co-founders of the Liberals in Liège. He was also the editor of the daily newspaper L'Express , which became the organ of the progressive liberals of Liège.
His actual political career began with his election as a member of the Chamber of Deputies , in which he represented the interests of the Liege district from 1894 to 1900 . In 1906 he became a member of the Senate and was a member of it until 1932.
Charles Magnette was also a Freemason and three times Grand Master of the Grand Lodge Grand Orient de Belgique, GOB During the occupation of Belgium by the German Empire during the First World War , he worked with the German Grand Lodges to prevent the deportation of workers and complained about the atrocities of the Germans Occupying forces publicly, which resulted in his own sentence of imprisonment. On the other hand, he was one of the proponents of the rattachisme , the incorporation of the French-speaking parts of Belgium into France . To this end, he wrote a letter to King Albert I in August 1917 , in which he demanded that Wallonia should decide in a referendum after the end of the First World War whether it should be annexed to France.
About his experience as a Freemason during the First World War, he wrote a book in 1920 under the title Grand maître national de la maçonnerie belge pendant l'occupation allemande 1914-1918 . After the end of the war he was one of the founders of the International Association of Freemasons ( Association Maçonnique Internationale ) in Vienna in 1921 .
For his services, he was awarded the honorary title of Minister of State on April 2, 1925 , although at that time he was neither a minister nor president of a chamber of parliament. Between 1927 and 1928 he was legal advisor to Justice Minister Paul-Émile Janson , Paul Janson's son.
He was last President of the Senate from November 13, 1928 to October 28, 1932.
