Albert E. Austin

Albert Elmer Austin (born November 15, 1877 in Medway , Norfolk County , Massachusetts , †  January 26, 1942 in Greenwich , Connecticut ) was an American politician . Between 1939 and 1941 he represented the state of Connecticut in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Albert Austin attended public schools in his home country and then Amherst College until 1899 . He then studied medicine at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia until 1905 . In the meantime he was active in the years 1899 and 1900 as a teacher at the Attleboro High School in Massachusetts. After his admission as a doctor, Austin practiced this profession between 1907 and 1939 in Old Greenwich . Between 1917 and 1937 he was also Greenwich City Health Officer. From 1926 until his death he was also involved in the banking business in this city. During the First World War Austin was used as a regimental doctor.

Politically, Austin was a member of the Republican Party . Between 1917 and 1919 and again from 1921 to 1923 he was a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives . In the 1938 congressional election, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth constituency of Connecticut . There he took over on January 3, 1939, succeeding the Democrat Alfred N. Phillips , whom he had defeated in the election. Since he lost himself in the following election in 1940 against Le Roy D. Downs , Austin could only spend one term in Congress until January 3, 1941 . This was overshadowed by foreign policy events such as the outbreak of the Second World War in Europe and growing tensions with Japan .

After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Austin resumed his previous activities. He died on January 26, 1942 in Greenwich and was in Hartsdale ( New York buried). Albert Austin was the stepfather of Clare Boothe Luce , who also represented Connecticut in Congress between 1943 and 1947.
