Old Greenwich is a town in the southeastern extension of the parish of Greenwich in Fairfield County , Connecticut , United States .
history
Founded in 1641, it was long a coastal parish and suburb of New York City . One of the first settlers and founders was Elizabeth Fones Winthrop, niece and daughter-in-law of John Winthrop , the founder and governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony . What is now Greenwich Point was formerly known as Elizabeth Neck , in reference to her 1640 land acquisition which encompasses much of what is now Old Greenwich . The poet Robert Silliman Hillyer spent his twilight years here.
The 1894 Old Greenwich Railroad Station was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989 . Today it serves metro commuters from the neighborhood. The longest beach in the town is an elongated, narrow peninsula on the southwestern edge of the town. The inner-city beach called Tod's Point is now publicly owned and freely accessible to citizens. Stamford borders the town to the east . Innis Arden Golf Club is partly in Old Greenwich but mostly on Stamford's terrain. Originally it was on Tod's Point .
Sights and public facilities
The town is also called Sound Beach and the main street with the shops is called Sound Beach Avenue . The Perrot Memorial Library is also located there . Another attraction is the First Congregational Church of Greenwich on the same street. There are three major schools: Old Greenwich School for K-5th grade grades, Eastern Middle School, and Greenwich High School. There is also a preschool on site. There is also a large sailing school in Old Greenwich, which offers courses of all kinds for both adults and children.
The rural community of Greenwich has a central administration, but it consists of different districts with their own postal addresses and ZIP codes , namely Byram , Cos Cob , Glenville , Mianus and Riverside (often referred to as downtown Greenwich ).
